Ramadan Reflections

Before relocating to Germany start of 2019, I had spent 14 years living and working in the Middle East. Dubai was my home and I embraced the rich cultural tapestry of UAE life as much as I could.

During the holy month of Ramadan, which occurs on the ninth month of the lunar-based Islamic calendar, Muslims throughout the world abstain from food and drink from dawn to dusk for 30 days. It is a time of spiritual reflection, self-improvement and worship. Through the very nature of living in a predominately Muslim city, I was very much exposed to this holy month. Through both colleagues and friends, I became increasingly aware of its significance. I really believe it took living there and experiencing Ramadan – albeit as an observer rather than actively participating – to truly grow to appreciate its symbolism and beauty. It also made me appreciate the fast that exists in many other religions too.

It dawned on me recently that I had commenced a 14-day Detox & Rejuvenate Programme on the same day as the start of Ramadan. This wasn’t intended – more of a happy accident - but I felt grateful for the overlap as it made me revisit my time in the UAE and reminisce about the significance of Ramadan.

Ramadan is an opportunity to break bad habits… not put them on pause or push them aside, but to genuinely break them. It is a chance to start a new chapter, to reboot your system, to demonstrate commitment and dedication. It is a time of positive change, inward reflection, self-evaluation and personal transformation. It is about resolutions and intentions. It is about connecting with others, accountability, support and encouragement. It is about overcoming challenges and trying to be a little better, each and every day.

It struck me that all these elements could also describe the journey experienced on my Detox & Rejuvenate Programmes…

I wondered, if I replaced the work ‘Ramadan’ in the bold paragraph above with the name of my programme, if the words would still reflect the truth. And indeed they do…

A 14-day Detox & Rejuvenate Programme from Your Optimal Health is an opportunity to break bad habits… not put them on pause or push them aside, but to genuinely break them.

So whether you’re a Muslim or not and whether you have spent time in the Middle East or not, spend some time today to reflect on the power of a reset and the strength of a reboot. Throughout our lives, we could all benefit from some self-reflection and when required, some redirection. If you’re in that space, perhaps I can support you?
