Detox 101

Detoxing. The very word can conjure up controversy, with some swearing by the benefits of a detox progamme and others, believing they’re all hype. I’m sure many readers aren’t even quite sure what a detox actually entails exactly so let’s go back to basics and digest what the very word means.

In a nutshell, a detox programme is an intentional effort to cleanse the body of toxins. The aim is to eliminate the daily negative – and often dangerous - effects that our bodies are subject to. These include the likes of pollutants and pesticides, heavy metals and synthetic chemicals, processed foods, sugar, nicotine and alcohol.

A good detox is like pressing the reboot button, helping you to feel better, look better, function better and achieve optimal health.

It gives our livers, kidneys and lymphatic systems a well-deserved break, which gives our bodies a chance to do a better job of all the miraculous functions they are designed to perform themselves, such as filtering blood, burning fat, regulating hormones, dispersing nutrients and more.

Put simply, we enable our bodies to optimise their own natural detoxification system.

A detox programme is very much in line with taking a holistic approach to health, which is how Your Optimal Health considers health and wellness. Benefits include banishing the bloat, weight loss, mental clarity, reducing headaches, better digestion, improved energy and a strong sense of general wellbeing.

As for the actual detox process, many are put off the idea, believing that they’ll spend their days starving, ‘hangry’, depleted of energy and well, unable to function. But an effective detox doesn’t need to look like that at all. At Your Optimal Health, the detox programmes are all about clean eating, healthy choices and self-care.

A key component of a detox is the reduction of inflammation in the body, which means loading up on anti-inflammatory foods and cutting back on inflammatory foods, along with other healthy lifestyle choices.

 Inflammatory foods include:

  • Processed meats

  • Red meat

  • Dairy

  • Fried & fast foods

  • Refined sugar & artificial sweeteners

  • Saturated fats

  • Syrups & sodas

  • Refined carbs & flour

  • Artificial preservatives

  • Alcohol & nicotine

Anti-inflammatory foods include:

  • Fruits

  • Nuts & seeds

  • Leafy greens

  • Beans & legumes

  • Healthy fats

  • Whole grains

  • Fermented foods

  • Olive & Coconut oil

  • Herbs & Spices

My programmes include a meal plan, recipes and guidance. I know everyone has busy schedules and needs flexibility so I’ve designed them to be easily incorporated into your life, whether you’re on the corporate ladder or a stay at home mom. I want to make sure all the ingredients are easy to find on the shelf and don’t require specialist grocery shopping.

After 14 days, you will have given your body a good spring clean, replaced old habits with new, armed yourself with great health knowledge and regained control of your cravings and choices.

You’ll also learn how to easily incorporate anti-inflammatory foods into your day-to-day diet, with effective grocery shopping and meal planning, advanced food prep, bulk cooking, making your ingredients multi-task and being ready and armed for snack attacks. You can incorporate these into your daily life long after your programme is complete. I strongly believe in long-term sustainable change over short-term fixes.
