What exactly is an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach?

Regardless of country or culture, we are bombarded daily with information on the ‘latest’ health trends, ‘leading’ wellness advice and the ‘must do / have’ diet, treatment, gadget or gizmo. It’s exhausting!

But luckily some sense is starting to prevail and we’re seeing a promising focus on the world of wellness coaching … and specifically Integrative Nutrition Health Coaching.

Let’s consider what this actually means…

HEALTH COACHING

A health coach works with clients to support them in making long-term, sustainable and positive health changes via coaching, advice, guidance, motivation and mentoring. Just as a sports or business coach helps clients excel in their sport and in their business, so does a health coach, help clients reach their health and wellness potential.

Health Coaches play a highly and ever-increasingly valuable role in the health and wellness field. Through health coaching, clients are able to consider all aspects of their life and how they are helping or hindering them in finding optimal wellness, transform their health goals into realities, replace unhealthy habits with healthy ones and be empowered to become the best version of themselves.

Health Coaches believe in forward and proactive thinking, offering both science and experienced-based support and combining both traditional and modern approaches. They also believe in the concept of bio-individuality, which recognises that we are all unique, so there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Every individual has their own needs, demands and best practices, according to their make-up, disposition, age, stage and situation.

INTEGRATIVE NUTRITION

Integrative Nutrition looks at our overall wellness. There should be no greater priority in our lives than striving for optimal wellness. As clichéd as the term may be, our health is our greatest wealth. Much to the surprise of many, our genes play a very minor role, which means that we – through choices around our diet, lifestyle and environment, have the lion’s share of control. Yet, we’re seeing greater illness than ever before, with millions of people suffering from largely preventable lifestyle diseases, so the pressure on how the health care industry operates, simply can’t continue. We need to get better at making dietary and lifestyle adjustments before we succumb to chronic illness and Integrative Nutrition Health Coaches are unique positioned to help people do this.

Integrative Nutrition is much more than just food. It looks at health and wellness from a holistic angle, with a focus on prevention before cure, maintenance before repair. It’s about nourishing our bodies (not just physically but mentally, emotionally and spiritually too) to perform their best, look their best and feel their best.

Great emphasis is placed on so-called Primary and Secondary Foods. Whilst secondary foods refer to the foods we actually eat, primary foods refer to other elements that nourish our bodies and mind, such as healthy relationships, emotional wellness, career fulfilment, physical activity and stress management. These are the ‘foods’ that sustain us, bringing us satisfaction, purpose, fulfilment and contentment. When they are out of balance or off-kilter, they have a big impact on our general health and wellness. Addressing the balance and making adjustments to maintain and sustain their balance, is literally a life-transforming exercise.

MY STORY

In hindsight, becoming an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach myself was a natural journey. I’ve been passionate about people and general wellbeing for as long as I can remember. My own background as an ambitious career woman, driven athlete and ‘salad lover’, resulted in showing me, first hand, the consequences of losing balance, sleep deprivation, unhealthy habits, stress and burnout. In healing myself, it was perhaps inevitable that my fascination with this field, would only increase and become my purpose going forward. So today, my mission is to support and empower others to achieve their health potential, find optimal wellness and feel alive, empowered and fulfilled. I will expand further about my journey in my next blog… watch this space.
